Weather, Climate and Adaptation of Animals to Climate| NCERT Solutions| Class 7

NCERT Solutions of Chapter: Weather, Climate and Adaptation of Animals to Climate. NCERT Solutions along with worksheets and notes for Class 7.

(1) Name the elements that determine the weather of a place.

Ans- The temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed and other factors are called the elements of weather.

(2) When are the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to occur during the day?

Ans- The maximum temperature of the day occurs generally in the afternoon while the minimum temperature occurs generally in the early morning. So, we feel hot in the afternoon in summers then in early morning in summer.

(3) Fill in the blanks:

(i) The average weather taken over a long time is called ____.

(ii)A place receives very little rainfall and the temperature is high throughout the year, The climate of that place will be ___and_____.

(iii)The two regions of the earth with extreme climate conditions are____ and __________.

Ans-

(i) The average weather taken over a long time is called Climate.

(ii) A place receives very little rainfall and the temperature is high throughout the year, The climate of that place will be wet and dry.

(iii) The two regions of the earth with extreme climate conditions are polar regions and tropical rainforests.

(4) Indicate the type of the climate of the following areas:

(a) Jammu & Kashmir: _________

(b) Kerala: __________________

(c) Rajasthan: ______________

(d) North-east India:_______

Ans-

(a) Jammu & Kashmir: Cold climate

(b) Kerala: Hot and wet climate

(c) Rajasthan:  Hot and dry climate

(d) North-east India: Wet climate

(5) Which of the two changes frequently, weather or climate?

Ans- Weather changes frequently because it can vary for a short period of time. Sometime weather is sunny and after few hours could come in the sky. Climate is average weather pattern taken over 25 years.

(6) Following are some of the characteristics of animals:

(i)  Diets heavy on fruits                                              (ii) White fur

(iii) Need to migrate                                                    (iv) Loud voice

(v) Sticky pads on feet                                                 (vi) Layer of fat under skin

(vii)  Wide and large paws                                          (viii) Bright colours

(ix) Strong tails                                                             (x) Long and large beak

For each characteristic indicate whether it is adaptation for tropical rainforests or polar regions. Do you think that some of these characteristics can be adapted for both regions?

Ans-

S.N. Characteristics Adaptation for Polar region/tropical rain forest Characteristics can be adapted for both region
(i) Diets heavy on fruits Tropical rainforest No, because no fruits in polar region
(ii) White fur Polar region No, because white fur is helpful to camouflage them in snow
(iii) Need to migrate Polar region No, animals of tropical rainforest need not to migrate
(iv) Loud voice Tropical rainforest No, only useful for tropical rainforest because number of animals living there are high. So, they need it to alert other animals from big hunter animals.
(v) Sticky pads on feet Tropical rainforest No, only needed to climb on the tree
(vi) Layer of fat under skin Polar region No, needed only in cold areas
(vii) Wide and large paws Polar region No, Needed only in cold snowy areas
(viii) Bright colours Tropical rainforest No, needed only in colourful surroundings
(ix) Strong tails Tropical rainforests No, Needed only to jump from one tree to another tree
(x) Long and large beak Tropical rainforests No, needed only to pluck the fruits from weak branches

(7) The tropical rainforest has a large population of animals. Explain why it is so.

Ans- The tropical rainforest has a large population of animals because climatic conditions of these areas are highly suitable for animal’s survival. Hot and wet weather is suitable for many varieties of fruits and veggies for herbivores. Different kinds of herbivores are food for different carnivores.

(8) Explain, with examples, why we find animals of certain kind living in particular climatic conditions.

Ans- Animals of certain kind find in certain climatic conditions because these conditions are suitable for them. Polar bear lives in cold climate. It is protected by its fur and fat. But its fur and fat is not comfortable for it in hot climate.

(9) How do elephant living in the tropical rainforest adapt itself.

Ans- Adaptation of elephant living in the tropical rainforest is given below:

(i) It uses its trunk as its nose.

(ii) It smells from its trunk and pick fruits and things with it.

(iii) It has modified teeth that are known as tasks.

(iv) It can tear the barks that it kike to eat.

(v) Its large ear helps it to hear soft sounds and keep it cool in hot and humid climate.

Choose the correct option which answers the following question:

(10) A carnivore with stripes on its body moves very fast while catching its prey. It is likely to be found in

(i) polar region

(ii) deserts

(iii) oceans

(iv) tropical forests

Ans- (iv) tropical forests   √

(11) Which features adapt polar bears to live in extremely cold climate?

(i) A white fur, fat below skin, keen sense of smell.

(ii) Thin skin, large eyes, a white fur.

(iii) A long tail, strong claws, white large paws.

(iv) White body, paws for swimming, ills for respiration.

Ans- (i) A white fur, fat below skin, keen sense of smell.

(12) Which options best describes a tropical region?
