The poem “The Road Not Taken” is composed by poet Robert Frost.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveller, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Explanation –

The poet is passing by the forest of yellow wood in autumn and stop at the point where two roads are going in different directions. The poet, a traveller was standing at diversion point and talking to himself that I cannot go on both paths. He is looking on the paths where roads bent and he can see only small trees, bushes etc.

In other words, poet was talking about the two paths which we can take in journey of our lives. We all are traveller in our life journey. So, we have to choose our path with great care. We should look our path carefully and then choose.

Then took the other, just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same.

Explanation –

The poet decided his path fairly. He had chosen the best one which is grassy and not used by others too much. When he walked on the path then he realizes that both paths are equally used.

In other words, poet wants to say that in our life we take decisions and thought that these are better than others. But it is not reality. Every decision or path has its own good or bad consequences.

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

The poet says that both paths are equally green and both paths are not much used. Because leaves on the paths are not turn black. But he kept first one for another day though he knew that he will not return back. Because he knew that his chosen path will lead to other paths.

In other words, poet is saying that choose your path which is not used by others. Believe in your path it will lead to many other path in future.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence;

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Explanation –

The poet says that after long time from now, he will take deep breath and will say that he has chosen the path between the two roads which is less travelled and it makes all the difference.

In other words the poet says choose the path which is less travelled and that will make difference in your life. Never afraid to choose new path, that can make history.
